Summer 2018, Week 4
This summer, we're continuing to include conversation starters,
bolded in each section of Edah News.
Kochavim campers had an achla fourth week of camp! Our edah-wide yom meyuchad on Wednesday was especially fun for all of us. Themes varied across the bunks with campers dressed up as movie characters, creatures from the sea, superheroes, what they want to be when they grow up, and wearing sports-themed shirts or pajamas. We had a fantastic time on our out-of-camp trip to the Hudson River Museum where we explored the kochavim (stars) in the sky during a special planetarium show. Our magic show and dinner at camp were special treats. Ask your camper to share his/her favorite activity from our trip! We are sad to say goodbye to our first session campers. We are already excited to welcome you back in 2019. We wish you a Shabbat Shalom from Kochavim!
Shorashim's fourth week of kayitz 2018 was incredible! This week we had Yom Tachbura (Transportation Day). We started the day with a virtual plane ride to Israel and then explored three types of car engines: electric, hybrid and gas. We read the book, "If I Built a Car," and, using their creativity and teamwork skills, each bunk built their own car using cardboard boxes, paper plates, and other materials. We also made paper airplanes and tested them to see how far they could fly. We also had fun with tachbura-themed relay races! Ask your camper which activity s/he most enjoyed on Yom Tachbura! Our much-anticipated trip day was another highlight this week. Campers loved building and exploring all of the fun activities at LEGOLAND. We had an amazing time at the magic show and a special dinner at camp. What an exciting way to end our first session. For our first session Shorashim friends, we hope the rest of your summer is fun and exciting. We can't wait to see you back on the migrash in Nitzanim next summer. Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom from all of us in Shorashim!
Nitzanim had an amazing fourth week of camp! On Wednesday we had Yom Masa Derech HaYahadut (Journey Through Judaism Day). We dressed up as explorers, tourists, and adventurers, and traveled through time to explore some of Judaism's historical milestones. We first visited the time of the Maccabees where we went on a scavenger hunt around camp searching for oil. Our next stop was further back in time to our Exodus from Egypt. We had relay races for the splitting of the Red Sea. We also "met" Rashi and discovered how to decode his script! We had a meaningful conversation about Israeli and American Jews, and how we can all relate to our common love of summer camp. Ask your camper about her/his favorite activitiy from Yom Masa Derech HaYahadut! Thursday was the peak of our week! We had a blast bowling and bouncing on our out-of-camp trip. It was a special treat to have afternoon swim and dinner at camp. We will miss our first session campers, but look forward to seeing you in 2019 wearing your green Solelim t-shirts. Nitzanim wishes all of our Ramah family a Shabbat Shalom!
Solelim had an achla week! A special highlight was our out-of-camp trip to Liberty Science Center. We loved exploring all of the fun games and activities, and seeing the IMAX movie, "Wonders of the Night Sky." Ask your camper what s/he enjoyed discovering at the Science Center. When we returned to camp we made delicious trail mix (nut-free, of course!), sang songs, and played guitar around our virtual campfire. We also had two special visitors this week. The JNF (Jewish National Fund) ran interactive water activities to demonstrate how Israel gets its water supply, and World ORT demonstrated some of the amazing technology projects and programs that they run in Israel and around the globe. We also enjoyed our own tech programs here at camp building structures in our makers space and printing on our 3-D printers in robotics. For those campers leaving us today, we can't wait to see you back on the migrash in 2019. Enjoy the rest of the summer. We wish you a Shabbat Shalom from Solelim!
Tzeirim had another amazing week of camp! We were busy with our tefillah bechirot (electives), and other exciting activities around camp. The highlight of our week was no doubt our trip and overnight at camp! We had a blast visiting the different exhibits at New York Hall of Science. We had a blast on the science playground, being creative in the animation station, and exploring optical illusions in the hall of mirrors. When we returned to camp we did our own egg drop experiment. Each team built a vessel for an egg, then dropped the egg from the clock tower. Ask your camper about his/her egg vessel and if the egg stayed in tact. We ended the day with dinner and a special evening free swim. We loved having s'mores by the bonfire and settled down to sleep in the gym. We hope our first session campers have a wonderful rest of the summer and a successful year. Wishing you all a Shabbat Shalom from Tzeirim!
Nevonim has had another fantastic week. Our week has been packed with activities throughout camp including omanut (art), yoga, and Pickleball. The highlight of Nevonim's week was our visit to SplashDown Beach water park and our overnight at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. We are truly grateful to our friends at Ramah Berkshires for welcoming us to their summer home. We loved connecting with our peers and sharing a bonfire together. Ask your camper about his/her favorite highlight from our overnight! During our Oneg Shabbat this week, we reflected on our goals for the summer! We were sad to say farewell to our first session campers, and wish you a wonderful rest of the summer. We can't wait to see you in Chalutzim in 2019! Shabbat Shalom.
Chalutzim and Bogrim had an amazing week! We started off with a special visit from the JNF (Jewish National Fund) Caravan who ran activities demonstrating the importance of trees and water in Israel. On Tuesday, before we hit the road, we had a "Thoughtful Tefillah" discussion about friendship, which laid the framework for the incredible edah bonding we had throughout our trip. At our first stop we enjoyed a "lunch and learn" about the mikvah at Mayyim Hayyim. We loved the Duck Tour of major sights in Boston, pizza dinner, and a fun overnight at Temple Aliyah in Needham. On Wednesday we had a blast at Six Flags and lots of fun getting to know peers and counselors on our overnight at Ramah New England. We wrapped up our trip by exploring the interactive exhibits at the Connecticut Science Center before returning home. Friday we had Yom Pajama (Pajama Day), which we always love! Ask your camper about his/her favorite part of our trip. We celebrated our first session campers and the end to an amazing first half of the summer with an ice cream party. We will miss our friends who are leaving and wish them a wonderful rest of the summer and incredible year ahead. Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom from Chalutzim and Bogrim!
